Shaping Human Rights Awareness

Dr. Photini Pazartzis, a respected professor of International Law at the University of Athens and the Chair of the United Nations Human Rights Committee, offers her perspective on her career path and the importance of global conversations in tackling urgent issues. Photini Pazartzis

Professor of International Law at the University of Athens

Dr. Pazartzis is the Chair of the UN Human Rights Committee ICCPR (since 2015), the President of the European Society of International Law (from September 2019), and a member of the Editorial Board of the European Journal of International Law.

She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Athens (1983) and her graduate studies at the University of Paris-II Panthéon-Assas.

She has been Visiting Fellow at the Lauterpacht Research Centre for International Law and at Wolfson College Cambridge (1998, 2017-2018), Director of Studies at the Hague Academy of International Law (French section, 2003), and has lectured in various universities and institutions, including the Universities of Bordeaux, Paris-I, Paris-II, Cambridge, Oxford, UCL, Sheffield, Oslo, the European University Institute and the Xiamen Academy of International Law (2015).

In July 2018, she delivered a course at The Hague Academy of International Law on Reparation in International Adjudication. She is Co-Chair of the ILA’s Study Group on The Content and Evolution of the Rules of Interpretation.

Her areas of interest are public international law, settlement of disputes, international adjudication and procedure, international criminal law, human rights law, and law of the sea.

Dr. Pazartzis speaks Greek, English (fluent), French (fluent), Italian (working) and is the author of many publications and edited volumes.
